The Independent is looking for a deputy editor to join its award-winning Voices desk. The successful candidate will be a team player with an excellent and diverse contacts book, a passion for representing varied opinions on the biggest news stories of the day, and a good knowledge of all aspects of digital journalism including social media and SEO. You will act as deputy to two co-editors who job share, and will be expected to run the team in their absence.

The right candidate will have leadership experience and will feel comfortable managing a busy national desk with a demanding daily output. We are looking for someone who can work fairly and diplomatically with people who might hold opposing views to their own; who prides themselves on snappy headline-writing and excellent copy-editing; and who can engage new audiences in innovative ways.

Key responsibilities
• Supporting the editors as a member of a close-knit team delivering a diverse list of opinion pieces

The Operations team

The operations team consists of 3 main parts:  Campaign management, Programmatic Operations and Ad technology. This person will be working closely with the Programmatic and direct sold team covering video and its overall strategy. The operations team has grown from 2 to 10 members with in the span of 2 years.

About you:

  • The Video Optimisation Manager will be a technical expert with an understanding of video platforms, players and technical adserving.
  • They will also have an in-depth understanding of Advertising operations, reporting, analysis and problem solving.
  • The position also involves understanding the technical features of video players and delivery of video campaigns both direct and programmatic.
  • The Video Optimisation Manager will take day-to-day management of the Video analysis and responsibilities guiding them on all aspects of campaign management ensuring that client objectives are met.

Job purpose:

  • Experience working with online video platform such as Brightcove, Ooyala etc
  • Demonstrable knowledge of RTB, audience data collection / tracking; ad network strategies and tactics, audience targeting best practice, ad serving, media reporting and analytics in web, mobile and video
  • Knowledge of every changing digital landscape and industry rules and governance
  • Experience with setting up video campaigns in DFP, setting up waterfalls/ passbacks
  • Understanding of header bidding / pre-bid solution

You’ll be joining a growing video team at an exciting time of expansion and development, with an ambition to create best-in-class video content across multiple digital platforms.

About you:

You’re an experienced video creator and news editor with a broad range of general knowledge. You’ve been working in newsrooms for several years sourcing, producing, editing and delivering timely, engaging news video content which drives views and increases engagement.

An exceptional, imaginative short-form storyteller with an eye for detail, you know how to get to the crux of a story, fast. You’re well-practised at making sound editorial and legal decisions under pressure, and you know how and when to refer those decisions upwards.

You know how to lead a team and coach video journalists to deliver their best work, and you’re comfortable liaising with colleagues across the newsroom to coordinate publishing for maximum impact. You’re highly organised and are always thinking several steps ahead.

Job purpose:

A Video News Editor is needed to drive the execution of video strategies in Evening Standard news verticals. This role oversees a small team of video journalists in our central London newsroom.
